Ingredients:
- 2 sheets store-bought puff pastry
- 2 cups milk
- 1/3 cup cornstarch
- 4 egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
Directions:
1. Start by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C).
2. Unroll one sheet of puff pastry and lay it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Use a fork to prick the pastry all over. Now, cover it with another sheet of parchment and place another baking sheet on top to weigh it down. This will help it bake evenly!
3. Pop that in the oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until it's beautifully golden brown and crisp. Once done, take it out and let it cool.
4. Meanwhile, grab a saucepan and heat the milk over medium heat until it's steaming but not boiling.
5. In a separate bowl, whisk together sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks until you have a smooth mixture.
6. Slowly whisk the hot milk into your egg mixture, then return everything to the saucepan.
7. Cook this mixture over medium heat, whisking constantly, until it thickens up nicely—about 5-7 minutes should do the trick.
